Top 5 Clay Court Tennis Shoes for Men
In order to maintain optimal footing on clay courts, it’s important to wear a tennis shoe that is designed to handle the build of this surface. Here are some key facts about clay court tennis shoes:
- The outsole of a clay court tennis shoe will usually feature a full herringbone (zig zags) tread pattern. This pattern helps keep clay out of your outsole so you can better grip the court when sprinting, stopping or changing directions. If some clay does gather, a couple of taps on the shoe with your racquet between points should knock the clay loose. The herringbone design makes sliding from side to side more predictable so you can perfectly glide into a shot and recover a la Nadal. It also provides the traction needed for securely moving forward and backward.
- The tighter knit upper of clay court tennis shoes aids in stability and also helps keep the clay from entering your shoe.
If you plan on playing on clay on a regular basis, you should consider picking up a pair of clay court specific tennis shoes in order to optimize your movement and stability on court. The right shoe for the right surface.

adidas SoleCourt Boost
Our playtesters loved the combination of all-around comfort, lightweight materials, stability and durability which the adidas SoleCourt Boost has to offer. Although this isn't a Barricade update, the SoleCourt Boost borrows much of the tried-and-true formula of the Barricade to perform as well as players have come to expect from adidas. With a pronounced shank, an outrigger and adiwear 6 outsole, the SoleCourt Boosts boasted stability, traction and durability as their primary strengths. The full length Boost technology in the midsole provides comfort and responsive rebound in every step. However, some playtesters had trouble with the fit as the forefoot is slightly wide, while the midfoot is narrow.

Asics Court FF 2
Seen on the feet of ATP star Novak Djokovic, the Asics Court FF 2 was one of 2019's most highly anticipated tennis shoe releases. Asics builds on the success of the original Court FF by keeping some of the most popular elements, like the Mono-Sock construction and ultra-responsive FlyteFoam cushioning. The Asics team then redesigned the upper with a more supportive blend of mesh and TPU materials. The updated outsole was inspired by motorcycle tires, and it offers a more rounded feel for better control when sliding.
The Court FF 2s are the first shoes to get our global review treatment, and playtesters from Tennis Warehouse, Tennis Warehouse Europe and Tennis Only tried them on a variety of court surfaces to provide an extensive assessment. It is safe to say that our team was more than impressed with every aspect of these shoes, from the comfort to the support to the weight. The global TW playtesters were hard pressed to find a negative. Overall, the Asics Court FF 2s feature the best of all worlds and should be on any player's list of must-try shoes.
