Upsides

  • Control
  • Spin
  • Feel
  • Tension Maintenance (for a co-poly)

Downsides

  • Too firm and underpowered for beginners

Summary

Developed with the help of a prominent ATP touring pro, Hyper-G is a bright green co-poly string from Solinco. Like Tour Bite (Solinco's most popular string), Hyper-G has a square shape and four grippy edges. Also like Tour Bite, this string gave our team phenomenal accuracy on full swings -- a fact supported by the nearly perfect control score we gave Hyper-G. Predictably, spin was a standout feature, and it helps explain why it was so easy for us shape the trajectory and angle of our shots. Perhaps the most surprising feature of Hyper-G was the feel, which proved surprisingly forgiving for a heavy duty co-poly. Granted, this string is likely too stiff and powerless for beginners, but if our team has it right, it should work very well for the poly veteran who wants superior control without over compromising the sweetspot. Another impressive feature was the tension maintenance -- typically the biggest downside of co-polys. For our crew this one held its playability longer than the majority of the strings in its class. With near iconic co-polys like Tour Bite in its growing line of phenomenal strings, it is becoming increasingly hard for Solinco to outdo itself. However, after hitting Hyper-G for a few weeks, we think the industry's fastest rising star may have moved the needle once again.

Solingo Hyper-G string Scores

  • Power - 51/100
  • Spin - 92/100
  • Comfort - 73/100
  • Control - 96/100
  • Touch - 90/100
  • Playability Duration - 73/100
  • Durability - 87/100
  • Overall - 90/100

Control - 96/100 / Power – Score 51/100

For our team Hyper-G was perfectly low-powered; it enabled us to execute our most powerful strokes without having to worry about overhitting, but it never felt underpowered. Even more impressive was the fact that it delivered such a high level of control without the harsh feedback that is often found with firm control strings.

Spin - Score 92/100

With its four sharp edges, Hyper-G gave our team great bite and easy access to spin. Although it wasn't the best spin string our testers have ever hit, they were able to bring the ball down very effectively with this co-poly. Even our our playtester who hits mostly flat shots got plenty of bite and ball rotation from this shaped co-poly.

Comfort – Score 73/100

With its rigid monofilament construction and firm composition, Hyper-G is built for control, not comfort. However, for our team, this string managed to be surprisingly forgiving for the breed. Neither player had issues with discomfort, with one stringing her racket 26 kg.

Feel – Score 90/100

Our team had zero problems with the feel of Hyper-G. It was firm enough to deliver great control and predictability, but it never felt overly stiff or unforgiving. Both playtesters felt connected to the ball, and one noted that this string felt softer than another popular Solinco string, Tour Bite.

Playability Duration – Score 73/100

Hyper-G posted very impressive scores for tension maintenance in our Tennis Warehouse University String Lab. This bodes well for big hitters who want a poly that doesn't “ bag out ” and lose its magic after a couple sessions. Both testers found this string to last about three weeks before needing to re-string.

Overall - Score: 90/100

What type of player would you recommend this string to?:

Michelle - “ Big hitters looking for a lowered powered response from their strings minus the higher level of shock that is often found with a lot of the firmer polys. ”

Chris - “ This is a great string for poly players seeking excellent control, solid spin and some enhanced feel. While not as crisp as say Tour Bite or Luxilon ALU Power, Hyper-G offers similar playability with a more forgiving feel. ”

Likes:

Michelle - “ I liked how I could string it up tight and it remained comfortably firm so I could hit out and add some control to my game. Plus, I had absolutely no arm issues. This is the kind of string I need for my game. ”

Chris - “ I loved the control. Simply superb. I also liked the amount of spin I was getting. The general feel and playability for the string was very enjoyable. Lastly, I love the color of this string. ”

Dislikes:

Michelle - “ This string did last longer than many of the polys I've hit, but I do wish it would have lasted longer...but let's get real, what poly remains as playable Day 1 as it does by Day 17?! ”

Chris - “None. This was a very fun playtest for me. ”

Comparing the string to others they've tried, our testers said:

Michelle - “ I just wrapped up a playtest on Kirschbaum Pro Line II and would put it in a similar category -- both are softer, lower powered polys. But I liked the bite of Hyper-G better. ”

Chris - “ This string wasn't far off my go to Volkl Cyclone. The stiffness felt somewhat similar while the response was a little different. Cyclone offers a deader response while Hyper-G felt like it provided a slightly higher launch angle. Both offer great spin. Whit Hyper-G I enjoyed a more forgiving response compared to many co-poly and poly strings. ”
